Yikes...3 months since I've blogged! And I'm blogging now to say that I'm getting back in the swing of things. I had this little guy on Feb 21st:

We're both happy and healthy, and the delivery was so easy, it almost seems unreal :)

Anywho, I am still waiting a couple weeks to open my shop again, but all my current clients will have new designs next week. Thanks so much for your patience and your understanding. I'm well rested because I have amazing clients :)

I love the concept behind this company. Little Bits of Kindness has a blog post everyday about how to do good. It's never anything major, but little things that can make a difference to people. Her etsy store isn't open yet, but I'm still excited to see it :) I designed Jennifer's Logo, Etsy Store and Blog...enjoy!

In other news...and why I've been so unbelievable awful at blogging the past few months, I'm having a baby and it's a boy :) I'm going to use the Rudy Robot Scrapbook Collection as inspiration for his room.

I'm pretty much in love with this logo because it's totally different from everything I've done. It's fun, punk-ish, and I love the name...so catchy!

In case you were wondering, the P is a pink ribbon for breast cancer and the K's are hockey sticks...and I had to dot the i with a hockey puck...just to make a point :)

It has been the least involved of my designs, but has gotten the best response...sometimes less is more :)

4 Little Things That Make Me Happy...

So, I've decided that I've got so many new orders and new designs that it's ridiculous trying to keep up with it...not bragging, just making excuses for not posting.

However, I did make a couple of changes to my blog that just make me happy :)

New Sidebar Titles...I took out the leaf and changed it to a blue background with my signature damask. I LOVE it.
You can now reach my facebook, twitter, skype and contact page with my cute little buttons. I've been wanting to do these sooner, but just haven't gotten around it.
You can also reach my etsy page from my sidebar. I'm using the Craftcult widget. I Love craftcult, by the way. Another thing that makes me happy :)

I've been busy with Riley's first b-day plans and just Riley being one in general takes up most my time :) I will definitely have a post about the party as I'm designing the invites and the fabric for the dress among other things. I'm truly inspired by The Cake Blog and wish I could just have a dessert party, but alas, I'm no baker. Seriously, for someone whose job is to make things pretty, I can not make a decent looking pastry. So Riley's party will definitely be a foodie party. But look how pretty:

I'm pretty excited and I'm definitely making it way too involved...but that's how I roll. One reason why I think I'm putting forth so much effort is because I'm majorly bummed that my baby is growing up. Don't get me wrong...she's amazingly fun, so sweet, has the CUTEST personality ever...but seriously, where did this year go? And can I have some of it back (not the first two months...those were rough...)?

But, I'm excited for what this next year holds for our little family. I know I don't usually post personal things on this blog, but everyone on my personal blog already knows I'm having a mini breakdown...so now you get to hear my sob story :) Enjoy!

The Story of the Throw Pillows

Okay...sounds boring...but it's fun for me.

I have looked for throw pillows pretty much my whole married life. We had some really cute ones the first year and a half that we were married. But, I really take issue with people using my throw pillows as foot rests. It felt like everyone that came over was doing it (sidenote: it may be helpful if you knew I also have an issue with feet. They're dirty, they're ugly...they're gross). So, I washed my cute throw pillows and the fabric literally fell apart at the seams. It was a sad day, my friends.

So, thus began my search for the perfect pillows. I couldn't find them. I don't like silk all that much and I don't like frilly things...so it was tough. I even contemplated making my own fabric...as in screen printing or stamping...yeah...it was a tad bit ambitious...especially for a woman who was 7 months pregnant when the screen printing idea came up.

Along came Spoonflower and it saved my life. I really didn't end up saving money...or time...but I got exactly what I wanted:

Okay, don't knock my photo taking or editing skills...the pictures don't really do it justice, but I'm in love with this fabric. Here is a better picture:

This is my workstation (note the ridiculously large pepsi that gets me through the day...everyday!)

If you'd like me to make you these pillows...that will be $5000. Did I mention I hate sewing? It's the most stressful thing ever. But, these pillows are super easy. If you don't want to pay $5000 for throw pillows, here is what you do:

Cut out one piece for the front. Mine were 18"x18".
Cut out two pieces for the back...and at least 1/3 the height of the first piece, but the same width. For example, mine were 18"X 14" (they were a tad too tall, but it is better to be safe than sorry).
Iron your pieces if you haven't already ironed the fabric (I do it after because I'm too lazy to iron 2 yards of fabric at one time...lol).
Fold the bottom of the two short pieces of fabric (about 1 1/2") and iron it down.
Sew along the folded piece...make your seam as large as possible.
Place the edges together (right side to right side like I have pictured) of your 18"X18" piece and your smaller pieces. Pin each side (you don't need to pin it very much. I only used 5 pins)
Sew them together (I like to use 1/4" seams) and turn them inside out.
That's all. Easy right?? Try it out with some scrap fabric before you move on to the good stuff.

I'm in love with this logo because it's totally different from everything that I've done. And I'm in love with the work that Jodie does. She creates high-end paper collage art. Take a look at her blog to see her work.

I also designed Jodie's blog, etsy store and business cards. It was just a really fun design to create...with all the layers and "scrapbook" paper (I really wanted to include that because that is what she works with). I actually have an addiction with scrapbook paper. I always want to buy it but I NEVER scrapbook. (Same thing with fabric). So this actually fed my addiction for a while because I don't have time to work on my scrapbook line, but I got to create all these different "papers" for Jodie and Red Jam Designs. So thank you Jodie for helping out a recovering shopaholic :)

It's 6 am here...I don't do mornings and I'm rambling, but I wanted to get this up before I had to start work.

PS...anyone know how to get a baby to sleep in after 5? I get a lot of work done this way, but oh my I'm tired!

Of course, I have to give it a try first, but I'm sure I'll love it. I'll let you guys know how I like it!! The thing I'm most excited for...interactivity without code. I have a hard time with codes. I never remember them and I'm a cut and paste type girl...so this will save my life and hopefully I'll begin designing flash websites like I've been promising everyone :)

Flowers, Bows and Hair-ties, OH MY!

I have been chomping at the bit to blog about this logo I did. Don't mean to toot my own horn or anything, but I love love love this logo! It just clicked for me...I'm not sure why because I'm not usually into majorly girlie things...but it helped that Michelle from Sugarbug Boutique wanted blues and yellows for her colors. Michelle drew up an image for me to go off of and I came up with this:

It was Michelle's idea, I just executed it :) I think it's EXTREMELY important for a client to have an idea for a concept. Of course, I love coming up with concepts...but it's easier to please a client that knows what they want. To prove that point...besides changing the font around, Michelle approved the silhouette figure after the first time she saw it. I was so happy because I really loved the way it turned out.

I then designed Sugarbug's blog, etsy store, business cards and bow cards...in a month. I think it was a record for me. Michelle needed all her designs ready for her show (read about it on her blog--it turned out amazing!) Here are some of the designs she sells:

SOOO CUTE! My favorite is the lavender flower...and though I hate to admit it, that huge PINK rose is absolutely adorable :) Can't wait to see more!

Shoe Spoonflower Contest

Spoonflower has contests almost every week. I try to enter the ones that appeal to me...and what's more appealing than shoes?

This is my design...please vote for me (or of course the other designs that you like!) Art Brush Tutorial

So, I searched EVERYWHERE when I was first starting out on how to make clean lines, and I didn't find any brushes in the brushes panel that I liked...I finally figured it out myself (like almost everything else). So, to keep my readers from going through that painstaking process, I'm going to bless you all (lol) with a series of tutorials on how to create your own brushes.

My three favorite brushes to use are art brushes, pattern brushes, and scatter brushes:

In this tutorial, I will show you how to make an art brush and I am using Illustrator CS3.

STEP ONE: I will be using the ellipse tool to create this brush, so select the Ellipse tool in the tools panel and create an oval shape. Don't make the shape too large.

STEP TWO: After you have created the shape you want, select the shape and go to the Brushes Panel (usually on the right side) and create a New Brush (it looks like a little notepad).

STEP THREE: You'll have many options to choose from. You can choose the direction the brush goes, the size, flip and colorization. I'm going to keep all the generic options because those work best for the stroke I created. Click OK.

STEP FOUR: Apply the brush to the stroke by selecting the stroke, then selecting your new brush in the brush panel (you might have to scroll down to find it if you have another brush selected already). Your image should end up looking like this:

Of course, don't limit yourself to oval or square shapes. You can create an art brush from any type of image.

Colour Lover

Yep, that's me...if I were European. Technically I'm color lover...but I digress.

I realized after I made my last post that I forgot to mention one of my most favorite designer sites:

But I thought it deserved its own post anyhow.

I showed my husband the site and he just didn't get why this was such a good tool...well, I'll tell you why:

Because you can search through thousands of other people's color palettes to get inspiration. Plus, you can heart a design so you can view it later.
You can create your own colors and color palettes and save them to your profile for others to view (mine is here.) I don't know how many times I have put a palette together for a logo and the person didn't use it, but I couldn't remember where I saved the palette. Plus, I don't have to save it to my computer...it's so handy.
You can also view and create patterns with your color palette. That way, you can see if those colors REALLY look great together.
I can send my clients to this site so they can show me what colors they like best. Sometimes I don't know what shade of blue they like...and many times I can't pick the color up out of a picture, so this site is perfect! They just copy the link and email it to me. Designers...if you're having shade and hue issues...send them to colourlovers.
It's fun. I could look at the site for hours if time permitted.

I have gotten a couple requests this week for me to teach people how to design, so I thought I might share some of my design knowledge today.

Honestly, the main thing I did was I googled and searched through TONS of design blogs (design blogs are THE best resource, especially for beginners!) Here are a couple of my favorites:

By David Airey, an Irish graphic designer in Scotland. This site is great for anything having to do with logo design.

Techno Target has every kind of tutorial you can think of...from Illustrator and Photoshop, Java and CSS...It's pretty much a one-stop shop (except it's all FREE!)

By Preston D Lee has great articles on how to be smart about your graphic design business.

I think I could spend all day looking at fabric designs. Spoonflower is one of my favorite sites...the people that upload designs on here are either starting out or have been designing for years...it's such a great array of styles. Brand New Edub!!!

...Again :) I was having an identity crisis...literally. I really liked my old logo, but it started to wear on me...and I just didn't think that it matched my style or skill level. I wanted something clean, fun, girlie, bright, colorful (of course blue and green!), something that would last me a while.

I went through many many many many drafts and styles. It is so much harder for me to design something from my own vision, than from other's...if that makes sense. I decided to keep it simple and I tweaked my favorite font (aerolinea), kept it green because that's my favorite, and added some depth. I love it. I love that I can work around it...it can match almost anything. For now, I have the leaves and flowers on my blog, but if I get antsy (obviously that happens a lot!) I can switch it with something new...but it will probably still be green.

Taking a Break...Obviously

So, I have been completely neglectful of my blog. I had a long Christmas Break and Riley, Sean and I all got sick and I got a ton of orders, and really, it is more important to me that I finish those orders than it is that I write in my blog...but I promise I will be back soon. I am working on a new look for Edub (again) to go with my new website (both of those have ALSO been on hold), but I'm starting to catch up. Sorry to my few frequent readers :)

Before and After Wednesday!

So I'm a little behind...oh well. It will just be before and after someday :) Sometimes my schedule is just too crazy to actually have a schedule.

After: The colors in the first one weren't exacly conveying the modern feel that she wanted for her bakery...so we switched it to orange and green, got rid of the leaves and junk and changed the font in life to look more like handwriting. The swirls actually came from a previous draft that I did, that I didn't actually save.

If the food is as good as the logo looks, I want some of that...ha ha :)

A little bit about EDUB...

One of my friends is doing a paper on me for college. It's about a woman entrepreneur...which I happen to be. I was so flattered that she asked to do hers on me...so of course I said yes. I thought she had really good questions, so I wanted to post the Q and A here :)

-How did you come up with the name "Edub" for your company?
Edub is just my initials- EW :)

-How do you balance your priorities (family, business, leisure time, etc.)?
My family is always first. I plan work around Riley's naps and "play time." I don't work on weekends or when Sean is home, unless it's imperative that I get a design out. I work in the mornings usually and start cleaning and cooking around 4. I'm still working on finding leisure time, but I enjoy what I do, so I guess that is my leisure time!

-What kind of advice do you have for other women looking to start their own business?
For women starting their own business: Have confidence in what you are doing, and find a niche (something that people will want). Having said that, start small. I had big dreams, so it was easy for me to get overwhelmed. By just starting out with $10 jobs, I knew I could grow from there. I'm still in the growing stage, but I know I couldn't have done this if I didn't believe in what I was doing.

-How do you see the future of Edub? 5 years, 10 years down the road?
5 years- I plan to do websites in the near future, but I also want to be more knowledgeable, so I might put everything on hold to get a bachelor's degree in graphic design. I'm thinking it might take me a few years since I don't want to go full-time. In the mean time, I want to start a printing business to attract more customers (I lose some because I don't print :P) And I'm going to start a scrapbooking business.
10 years- By now, the kids will all be in school :) So, I want to do this full-time while they're at school. I also want to have a few employees to help me with the printing and designing. This is where the whole dream big thing comes into play!

-Also, could you give me a date/time frame of when you learned graphic design, then found out about etsy stores and started bidding, and when you made your own business?
Timeline: First off, I've been doing graphic design for forever, but I only used paint. My dad told me to go into graphic design, but I didn't listen :) Parents really do know what they're talking about!
February 2007- Started digital scrapbooking...realized I was pretty good at it!
August 2007- I started writing and designing my company's handbook. This is when I really got interested in graphic design.
April 2008- Moved to Arizona. My company still let me keep my job, but the business was really slow, so I mostly practiced designing while I was there!
July 2008- Lost my job with my company, so Sean and I lived off our savings for the rest of the year. I really started brainstorming about what I could do...
April 2009- Started designing logos for $10 on etsyI have since raised my prices (obviously), and I get about 2 or 3 clients a week!

Glambaby Designs

I'm way excited to feature this logo. I love it...the colors, the star, the distressed look, the fonts, everything about this. It's totally my style. And this is from yet another etsy store I wish I'd known about when I was looking for baby stuff. Glambaby Designs has the cutest diaper bags! Maybe for my next baby when my purse is shot :) If you don't have a baby, don't worry, she has other cute items, like purses, wallets and wristlets!

Before and After Monday

I have been thinking lately about what I can do to make my blog more enjoyable to my readers. Also, how to get more readers :) And the thought hit me...maybe I should talk more about the design process...since that's what I do. Being a first-time mommy (and running around like a chicken with its head cut off), I usually only make time to post the AFTER....the result of hours of work on a logo. Today, and hopefully every Monday, I want to show you the BEFORE!

This is still one of my favorite logos and one of my favorite people to work with. When we started, she didn't even have an etsy shop. Now, she has a successful shop and she's a successful crafter. I have a key fob she did and it's wonderful. I never have to look for my keys in my huge diaper bag/purse and it's also very stylish.

So, Kristen of modmomME wanted a silhouette of a modern woman holding a baby, a purse and had a toddler hanging on to her leg. I was pregnant at the time, so I didn't realize how true this image was. I think it captures what every mom does every day! She also wanted pink, turquoise and brown for her colors...with a touch of a chartreuse-ish (not sure of the color tone here) green the first draft looked like this:

Pretty good for my amateur self...but not quite what Kristen had in mind for her company logo. With a little tweaking, her final draft ended up like this:

A lot of people feel bad for having me do a lot of drafts...but that's why I offer unlimited revisions! I want your logo to be perfect!!! Company branding is very important, so you want it to be right. I think we got modmomME right :)

I have been way behind in posting this, but I really wanted to post this even though it's in my portfolio. This design was really fun to do because of all the patterns on this topsy turvy cake. Who knew that watching food network's Challenge would come in handy? The cake competitions really helped inspire me for this logo for Whimzy Creations. She makes the cutest custom birthday banners and other party favor supplies. Can't wait for Riley to turn one so I can shop here!

Funny story about my scrapbook company name. I was so excited about my new logo and I showed my husband right when he got home...he said "that's cute..." then read it out loud "Edub's crap" Ha! So, I'm changing my name to "Scrap Edub"...I'm lucky I have a guy around to think of things like that. I think Scrap Edub has a cute ring to it...I always think of rub-a-dub-dub when I say it...so coming soon: Scrap-edub-dub three kits in a...tub??? Okay, I'm not clever, but still, it's exciting :)

She makes bedding sets and they are so cute! It made me sad that I already had all of Riley's crib items...but I promised her that I'll look her up for our next one. Also, another reason to check out her store is her banner...I love it!

Katydids

So, I have a huge fear of (and this is totally embarrassing)...grasshoppers. They seriously creep me out. When I was looking up pictures for this logo, I was literally gagging looking at all the grasshoppers. At least katydids are the cuter kinds, but still...it was rough for me!

However, I think the katydid in this logo turned out oh so cute...no gagging here :) I also love the polka dots in the lettering, the font is awesome (from 1001freefonts.com...I purchased the 10,000 fonts and it has been a lifesaver!), and I just love this new logo. So did my client...because I didn't even have to do any revisions :)

Clever Cupcake

So, I had a challenge with this one because I had already made a cupcake logo, and the owner of Clever Cupcake wanted it to look like the Run, Lori, Run logo...which consequently, also looked like the Vintage Bakeshop logo. So, I had to come up with something the same, yet totally different (isn't that a movie quote?) I think I nailed it! The cupcake concept is totally different, and the cupcake "foil" border adds a nice touch. Clever Cupcake makes these cute pendants...all custom made with your design. Be sure to check her out! Right now she has her Halloween banner up...which I also designed :)

Kameron Haban lost his battle with Lupus Wednesday morning. He has touched the lives of so many with his huge smile and genuine kindness, and will be missed by so many! Jami has also touched many with her amazing courage and faith throughout their ordeal. Whether you know them or not, please keep Jami and 2 1/2 year old son Kason in your prayers.

This sweet family is in need of emotional, spiritual and physical support. Kameron spent more than the last month of his life in the ICU. We are all blessed with an opportunity to help. I was tagged by SavvyStitcher and modmomME I must now share 10 facts about myself with my readers and tag 10 of you to do the same. So here is goes...

1. I'm actually pretty shy at first, but when you get to know me I'm really chatty...I just never initiate a conversation!
2. I barely started learning graphic design last year...but I've been creating my whole life. However, I've found that with graphic design, I need less patience because you can just press "undo" (which is great when you're a perfectionist).
3. I have really missed eating sushi and steaks through this pregnancy. I told my husband he's making a trip to Texas Roadhouse for me the night I give birth (it's not a steak unless it's still mooing)
4. Etsy has made me completely obsessed with checking my emails...something I'll have to control when the baby comes.
5. I buy things because they're cute...not necessarily for function. I have a mint chocolate because it's green, but really have no idea what it's capable of doing.
6. My husband is my very best friend and I still get excited when I hear his car drive up...cheesy, but I love it :)
7. I absolutely hate being pregnant! I'm so ready for this to be over and I just want to hold my baby!!!
8. If I clean one thing in my house, I have to clean the whole house...I have to have a day set aside just to clean it...Which is why sometimes I procrastinate cleaning (it is clean though...don't want anyone to think I'm a pig).
9. My favorite things: family, food, and shopping...seriously, I have a problem
10. I'm LDS and I love it! My little brother is currently serving a mission in Belem, Brazil and I'm so proud of him...so when you see a mormon missionary, think of my little 19 year old brother knocking on your door and be nice to him :) www.lds.org

Guess My Baby's Birthday Give-away!

So, I thought this would be such a fun give-away...and it's my first, so even more fun! Here's me right now (actually, two weeks ago, so I'm bigger now):My due date is July 11 and at this point, I'm ready to have this baby...so in celebration of that great day, I'm going to give away these two blank 4 x 6 cards .jpeg images. As I said before, my computer was on the brink...so I couldn't update ANYTHING! Here ares some logos that I finished...I have to say that LilyBelle is my favorite logo, and I know she loved it as well. Mooce Baby, JJ Craftworks, and Dangles all have etsy shops, so check them out!!!

I don't know. I find it hard to update my personal blog because I just don't have a lot going on right now (I have a baby on the way, so that may change soon...) But, one thing I have to do everyday is create. I don't have any vices (...or does pepsi count?), I have a very calm personality, and I deal with things internally, so it only makes sense that I would need some creative outlet. My husband is the only one that has seen any of my designs/projects and he really encouraged me to let others see what I can do. My first post will be of business card design I created for myself, since I LOVE it:

I originally designed a bunch of scrapbook paper designs with these elements for a scrapbook I'm making of my pregnancy/first year for my baby. I loved the flower so much, I had to use it again. I will be selling this scrapbook line in my etsy store very shortly. I just need to add some more embellishments to the set. I really like symmetry, so that is why I always turn toward square business cards and invitations...plus, it's a great way to stand out!

Payment is due before I start on your design. I only accept paypal payments to ensure a speedy transaction.

Design Process

As soon as I receive payment, I will send you a questionnaire in pdf format. Once your questionnaire is filled out and emailed back to me, I will start brainstorming and sketching your design. I will have a draft to you within 5 BUSINESS days after I receive your questionnaire (unless stated otherwise). As soon as you approve your designs, I will email the files to the address you specify.

As soon as images are approved and sent, I start charging for revisions.

Refunds

Due to the nature of my services, I do not offer refunds. However, it is very important to me that you are satisfied. I will work with you until your designs are perfect for your needs!
